Skincare as a daily foundation: In conversation with Jetteke van Lexmond and Alex Jaspers

For Salon d’Homme, we spoke with brand building consultant and shareholder of New Amsterdam Surf Association Alex Jaspers and stylist (VOGUE, VOGUE Living) and founder of Moonsisters Jetteke van Lexmond about their daily routines, how care has a fixed place in their lives, and the role skincare plays in that. Taking good care of yourself - whether through food, movement or skincare - is not a luxury or a trend to them, but a natural and essential part of their everyday routine.

Alex, has skincare always been part of your life?

Alex
“For me, it starts with care. Taking care of your body, your fitness, your mind -skincare naturally belongs to that. It’s something I grew up with. My mother worked in the fragrance world, so yes, I literally used to dip my finger into her creams. At some point I started buying my own products, and later on, of course, more and more brands began offering skincare for men.”

Jetteke
“Well, it also happened quite often that you ‘borrowed’ my skincare. Basically, whatever I used, you used too.”

What does your routine look like now? How do you wind down at the end of the day?

Alex
“We shower twice a day. I always cleanse my skin, never with soap, because I don’t like that tight feeling. I always use a serum and a good day cream. I like layering products - I love rich creams, a bit of shine. I also enjoy using castor oil.

He keeps his routine intentionally flexible. I switch products so my skin doesn’t get used to just one cream or formula. But I do know what works for me: a serum, a night cream and an oil. Those are really my three basics.”

Jetteke
"For me, skincare isn’t a quick routine, but a daily ritual. Morning and evening I cleanse my skin - that moment forms the foundation of everything. From there, I listen to what my skin needs and adjust my serums, moisturisers or oils to the season.

I consciously choose clean beauty brands where efficacy and aesthetics come together, such as Tata Harper, goop and Westman Atelier.

Alongside my daily skincare, I also work with exfoliating peels, masks and deeper treatments. Every day I use thirty minutes of red light therapy with the Lyma laser to support my skin from within. And once a month I schedule connective tissue massages and beauty treatments.”

Self-care for you clearly goes beyond skincare. In what other ways do you make sure you feel good?

Alex
“I have a very active lifestyle. I love running - marathons and trail running - and I alternate that with the gym. Afterwards, I always do a round of sauna and steam room. I really take my time with it and I almost never skip it, even when I’m very busy.”

Jetteke
“You’re really very good at that. I’d like to be as consistent, but I don’t manage it every single day.”

You also share a strong focus on good nutrition. Where does that come from?

Jetteke
“We’re both quite conscious when it comes to wellness. We love good, pure food. A fixed ritual for us is going to the market every Saturday to buy products directly from the farmers. And we truly enjoy cooking with beautiful ingredients.”

Alex
“We also experiment a lot together and inspire each other - with food, supplements, fasting. Recently we did a period of fasting together. It was mentally challenging, but it also gave us new insights. It makes you aware of your patterns and how much eating structures your day. You realise how fixed your routines are.”

What would you like men to take away about skincare and self-care?

Jetteke
“I think many men still have a threshold to cross when it comes to skincare. While it can do so much for you - your skin really is your calling card. It’s like a well-ironed shirt instead of a worn-out sweater. It’s about presenting the best version of yourself.”

Alex
“For many men, skincare still isn’t obvious. A visit to a salon or investing in good skincare can be a valuable addition to taking care of yourself.”
